Cankerworms can travel from tree to tree...

Tree Band Aid is a Winnipeg-based tree banding service, founded in the River Heights area in 2001.

Our mandate is to protect our city's beloved  tree canopy by installing high quality tree bands at an affordable cost.

We thank our long term customers, many of whom have been banding with us for over a decade!

Why Band?

Tree bands are the first line of defense against invasive cankerworm populations that feast on the leaves and buds of elm, ash, Manitoba maple, linden, oak and certain ornamental trees. This defoliation is harmful as it weakens trees' immune systems, making them vulnerable to other problems such as viral diseases and pest infestations.

Cankerworms, a type of moth, have an annual life cycle. In the fall, the wingless females crawl up tree trunks, bound to lay eggs in the crowns of trees after the first severe autumn frost. These eggs hatch in the spring, producing larvae that feed on tree foliage. In September, we trap the wingless moths by wrapping trees with foiled insulation bands and plastic tape, on which we apply a sticky natural product called "tanglefoot". The bands are removed in late May so as to allow trees to grow, and to prevent trunk rot.

"The best way you can control adult cankerworms is to band your trees before larval cankerworms become a problem. Banding your trees with Tanglefoot is an environmentally acceptable way to keep adult cankerworms from climbing the tree to lay eggs. [...] Encourage your neighbours to also band their trees because cankerworms can travel on their silken threads as larvae."

Testimonials

"Tree Band Aid is an excellent service, reliable and professional."

-Charlotte Holland, long-term customer.

“Now more than ever we need to protect and value our trees. A hot dry year like this one puts extreme stress on the city’s tree population, and climate change is only going to make things more difficult for trees in the years to come. I’m grateful to Tree Band Aid for the way it cares for my trees. I no longer have to search for someone to band my trees, and I no longer need to risk forgetting to band; Tree Band aid contacts me when banding time arrives. Thanks so much!”
